This Old Ragtime piece comes up now and then in Old-Time Fiddle jams.
I first learned it from South Bay Area Fiddler Pete Showman
This Delmore Brothers classic duet has been a long time favorite. The original had 2 harmonicas but I added just one.
Karen sings this Stephen Foster flavored song.
Recorded in 1929 by Charlie Poole and The North Carolina Ramblers
I wrote this song when i first moved to the Sierras. When I travel near the Donner Pass Summit I often think of the challenges this rugged country presents to all who try to tame her.
I sang tenor on this Monroe Brothers classic with Matt Dudman when we played with CBA Co-Founder Jake Quesenberry
This is one of Doc Boggs most enduring songs. He calls it Honeybabe Blues.
I call it Red Rocking Chair to avoid confusion with Clarence Ashley's song with that title
Karen is a rancher and rides her some horses.
When we were working on the album Karen wanted to record this old Irish Aire to send it to her Dad who has always loved and supported her Beautiful Fiddling
This song is a "courting ballad" thought to date back to traditional Irish ballads. I learned it from the Stanley Brothers who likely heard the 1927 recording by fiddler G.B. Grayson and guitar player Henry Whitter.
This one is played a lot at Old-Time jams in the Bay Area and up here in the Mountains. Karen and Scot learned it from Roke and me.
Written by Mac McMichen off the Skillet Lickers, My version mostly comes from Jimmie Rogers, "The Yodeling Brakeman".I play a Hohner Bass harp and mando
Carter Stanley died before he made it to the studio with this fine song.
My version mostly comes from the Larry Sparks/Ralph Stanley record.
When I opened for Ralph Stanley in 2002 he told me he considered his style "Mountain Music" not Bluegrass
I met and befriended a fiddler named Christine at an Old-Time jam at
the Niebyl-Proctor Marxist Library in Berkeley, Ca. She wanted to play this tune but we skipped it because no-one knew it. I learned it from the original Doc Roberts recording but Christine and her husband Abel both died before I got a chance to play it with them. I always think of her when I play this melancholy tune. Karen and i came up with the harmony parts for the last time around.
